Fears come true for Coromandel rescuers NZ Herald Jan 12 2012 The Westpac Rescue Helicopter has early this morning winched a woman from an area between Coromandel and Matarangi, after she fell some 30 metres while rock climbing with a group of others. Crew member Rob says the helicopter crew had actually flown over the same group yesterday, on the way back from another job. “On the way past Castle Rock, which is a very large rock formation on the top of the Coromandel Ranges, we saw eight people standing on the top of the rocks. We thought, that’s pretty amazing they got up there, I hope we don’t have to be back for them,” he says. The injured woman has suffered a broken pelvis, along with back and internal injuries, and was airlifted to Waikato Hospital. |
