Bruce's Story - Woodhill

What started as a routine mountain biking session quickly turned into a serious medical emergency for Bruce. While training for an endurance race, Bruce suffered a crash on the trail, that left him with severe facial trauma. Though he isn’t certain exactly what he hit, possibly a tree stump, he recalls the impact that caused significant injuries that could have become life-threatening. Alone and injured, a fellow rider on the trail came to his aid and quickly called for help. Within moments, a trained Woodhill medic was on scene stabilising him and calling 111.

Due to the severity of his injuries and the risk of airway compromise from swelling, it was decided Bruce needed rapid transport to a hospital equipped for trauma care. He was first taken by ambulance, to Woodhill base, where the Auckland Westpac Rescue Helicopter crew were ready to airlift him to Middlemore Hospital to ensure the fastest possible care. “I was obviously terrified,” Bruce remembers, “but the calm professionalism of the crew gave me confidence that I was in capable hands.”

Bruce vividly recalls the efficiency of the rescue helicopter team. “Their communication was excellent. Seeing them work together so professionally was incredibly reassuring,” he says. The helicopter, essentially a flying mini-triage centre, ensured he received continuous expert care from the scene right through to the hospital.

Since the accident, Bruce has undergone substantial surgery and is still recovering. He has started a gradual return to work, and daily routines while managing both physical and emotional recovery. Despite the challenges, he reflects on the experience with gratitude. “There’s a sense of relief and comfort that comes with being in the hands of such caring professionals and knowing you’re being taken where you need to be as quickly as possible.”

Thank you, Bruce, for sharing your story with us. It is a reminder of the importance of quick response, expert care, and teamwork in emergency situations and of the difference a calm, highly skilled rescue team can make to a patient in moments of crisis.
