Teenager charged over Northland car crash that claimed two lives - Stuff

A teenage driver who allegedly fled the scene of a fatal car crash will appear in the North Shore District Court on Monday.

The 19-year-old male faces two charges of driving with excess breath alcohol causing death.

Two people died in the crash on State Highway 1, near Topuni in Northland, that happened just before 9pm on Saturday.

Another person was flown to Auckland Hospital in a serious condition and a child was taken to Starship Hospital, also in a serious condition.

Westpac Rescue helicopter crewman Ati Wynyard told Stuff the crash scene "wasn't very flash at all" and looked to involve a family travelling in a small people mover and a four-door car.

"The vehicles were both extensively damaged" he said.

"It was a massive, massive mess."

On Sunday afternoon a police spokeswoman said that after the crash, the 19-year-old driver allegedly "continued south towards Auckland" in a silver four-door sedan.

"As a result of further inquiries, this vehicle was located just north of Auckland, where police spoke with the driver and another occupant," she said.

A man was arrested and charged with two counts of driving with excess breath alcohol causing death.

Police said further charges were possible and they want to hear from anyone who was driving on SH1 on Saturday evening, particularly in the Maungaturoto and Kaiwaka areas, and who saw the silver car before the crash.
